Roachdale Elementary School was built on a 16-acre site in 1951 and underwent a classroom addition and remodeling in 1987. The air-conditioned building has 16 classrooms, library, computer lab, music, art, a gymnasium with a stage and cafeteria. The media center, computer lab, and a new conference room were added to the building prior to the start of the 2000-2001 school year. The school houses a regular program for grades Kindergarten through 5. One special education classroom is also located in the building.
The school takes great pride in recognizing students and servicing their needs. A number of incentives have been instituted to recognize excellence. Among these are: Honor Roll Luncheon, Presidential Academic Fitness Program, Book-It Reading Program, the Artist Recognition Program, Good Citizenship Awards, Attendance and Responsibility Awards, and an Awards Program at the end of the school year.
Other activities offered to students include: Cross-age tutoring, reading morning announcements and leading the pledge, selling school supplies, REACT, Student Council, Girls' Volleyball, Track, Special Olympics, Learning for Life Scouts, Native American Day, Environmental Awareness programs, Jump Rope for Heart, Spell Bowl, Math Bowl, Make a Difference Day, ACES, Riley Hospital fundraiser, and Title I Adventures in Learning Nights.
The Roachdale PTO is a very active organization. Parents have assisted in co-sponsoring some of the activities listed above as well as: Spring Carnival, Santa's Workshop, Grandparents' Day, and a fundraiser. Proceeds from the fundraiser are given back to the students in the form of convocations, equipment, and materials to supplement the school's funds.
New this year, Roachdale Elementary will begin a Robotics Club for students in grades 3-5 thanks to a grant sponsored by Tech Point Youth. In addition, in January we will roll out our technology initiative integrating the use of Chromebooks into our curriculum and instruction. Our vision is for our students to be innovative, collaborative, and own their own learning.
