Head Lice season has begun. Here are some tips and support from your School Nurse.
⦁ Head Lice are a common problem amongst school-aged children and their families and impacts millions of students each year. They attach to the hair of anyone, they are not a sign of poor hygiene
⦁ Lice can only crawl, but at a rapid rate of 12”/ minute. They can not fly or jump. They spread through close head to head contact or by sharing hats, hair accessories, brushes or pillows.
⦁ Head Lice are tiny bugs, about the size of a sesame seed (2-3mm). They feed on small amounts of blood from the scalp and lay eggs in the hair. They live about 28 days and lay up to 10 eggs per day.
⦁ The most common symptom of head lice is itching, especially behind the ears or at the back of the neck. Sometimes there is no itching for the first 4-6 weeks after lice are on the scalp so be sure to check all family members for lice and nits(eggs).

***Parents please be diligent in routinely checking your child’s head. If there is concern for head lice and you are unsure how to check your child's head, please feel free to ask your school nurse. If detected, head lice can be treated by closely following the instructions on special lice shampoo (found at the local pharmacy or supermarket). Although time-consuming, the very best way to ensure your child has gotten rid of head lice is to carefully remove all lice and eggs you find in the hair. After Treatment, your child can return to school but will need to be transported and accompanied to the clinic for permission to return by the school nurse. If live lice are found, your student will be sent home for another treatment. Please feel free to reach out to your school nurse with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have.
