Did you know that a cow doesn't have 4 stomachs? Instead they have 1 stomach with 4 compartments! Students in Animal Science recreated the ruminant animal digestive system out of play dough today making sure their play dough resembled the lining of each compartment.
about 1 year ago, Janna Oxford
Digestion starts in the esophagus.
Then food travels to the rumen with papillae lining.
Next up is the reticulum with a lining that looks like honeycomb.
3rd compartment is the omasum which has several folds and small papillae.
Last up is the Abomasum which is a glandular digestion and smooth lining with a few folds.
Digestion occurs with enzymes and microbes breaking down food.
Food will exit the stomach through the small intestine.
Finally the large intestine!
Not all animals are ruminants, instead some are monogastrics.
Hands on learning!
